Tillinghast (right) reviews drawings with his foreman during the construction of Winged Foot Golf Club in 1922.

A.W. Tillinghast was a Promethean figure in American golf. Designer of world-class courses such as Winged Foot, Baltusrol and Bethpage Black, “Tilly” was also a brilliant essayist and influential advocate for the game.

"At last we have an authoritative biography of the great golf architect Albert Warren Tillinghast. Well researched and very readable, it brings the master fully to life. Those of us who previously had only a rudimentary knowledge of Tilly, based on the classic courses he created, will marvel at the real man--his ambitions, his ideals and his struggles."
--Bob Grant, noted English golf historian, collector and publisher

"In Tillinghast: Creator of Golf Courses," author Philip Young sheds new light on the life of legendary architect and Baltusrol mastermind Albert Warren Tillinghast."
--Golfonline.com

"I couldn't put it down! Riveting stuff!"
Alena Bubniak, Managing Editor GOLFONLINE

"I thought it quite good… Your recitation of his life events and attitudes seemed to be as close to accurate as one can get from the distance of many decades..."
Philip W. Brown Jr., Grandson of A.W. Tillinghast

HIGHLIGHTS OF A REMARKABLE LIFE
  • Tilly was a rudderless youth until his father took him to St. Andrews in 1896 and introduced him to Old Tom Morris.
  • The architect infl uenced the design of Pine Valley and scored the first birdie there.
  • Tilly insisted on making his courses enjoyable for the average golfer even as they tested the world’s best to the utmost.
  • Barnstorming on behalf of the PGA in 1936 and 1937, Tillinghast visited more than 400 clubs, advising them on maintenance and design. His whirlwind tour
helped the clubs and the PGA itself survive the Great Depression.
  • Interviewing Tillinghast’s descendants, author Young makes the case that Tilly suffered from depression. He documents Tilly’s struggles with alcohol and clarifi es his often misrepresented fi nances.
  • The book includes the most comprehensive presentation of Tillinghast’s life’s work, alphabetically and by year, plus appendices on his friendship with Donald Ross, the making of Bethpage Black and much more.

David Barrett, Managing Editor of Tillinghast - Creator of Golf Courses wrote this about the book:

"The depth of Phil Young's research is impressive and enables him to provide a detailed look at Tillinghast's life and the often troubled man behind the genius golf course architect."

About the Editor
David Barrett was an editor at Golf Magazine for 18 years and has edited several books for Harry N. Abrams Publishers. He is currently editor-in-chief at Divot Communication Corp.
